Dozens of teachers and nurses descended on the Capitol to tell Rick Scott and the Legislature that they won’t fight each other over funding. After a symbolic tug of war match that ended with both sides refusing to engage in a fight over the state’s limited resources.
Instead, both sides urged lawmakers to reform Florida’s tax code to treat wealthy corporations with the same rules that all Floridians play by. Senators Nan Rich and Oscar Branyon along with Representative Evan Jenne were present to promote the alternative option of the Fair Economy Act, which would end the loopholes corporations use to avoid paying hundreds of thousands in taxes. If the bill were to pass it would generate nearly $500 million in uncollected taxes that could go towards more teachers and care givers for Florida.
